John O’Donohue, where have you been all my life?!
I discovered this remarkable writer yesterday when a sober sister posted one of his poems on her Instagram. OH MY GOODNESS!!!! I fell madly in love with his words, his imagery, his everything. And isn’t it better to be in love with a dead poet than a box of wine? I think so!
I bought one of his books on Kindle and almost every word is highlighted by hundreds of people. Not kidding. He’s that good.
I’m going to devour everything I can from him this weekend. Right now, I have five donkeys running loose on the farm, including one in the chicken coop helping himself to all the chicken feed, two customers coming to pick up their baby lambs, and I desperately need a shower.
So Mr. O’Donohue will have to wait until later when I can curl up with a cup of tea and his beautiful work. I leave you with this gem. I haven’t read much else because I keep rereading this.
I’ve decided that unfurl is a lovely word. I adore words that sound like their meaning and unfurl does that. When I say it, I can just picture my heart unfurling into grace. Oh, wow.
I’m a writer. I love words anyway and I particularly love words that are so glorious.
This is my anthem right now for my recovery. My courage is kindled. My spirit awakened. I’m holding nothing back. I’ve left behind what I’ve outgrown and have stepped onto new ground. He perfectly and magically wrote my heart.
For A New Beginning
In out-of-the-way places of the heart,
Where your thoughts never think to wander,
This beginning has been quietly forming,
Waiting until you were ready to emerge.
For a long time it has watched your desire,
Feeling the emptiness growing inside you,
Noticing how you willed yourself on,
Still unable to leave what you had outgrown.
It watched you play with the seduction of safety
And the gray promises that sameness whispered,
Heard the waves of turmoil rise and relent,
Wondered would you always live like this.
Then the delight, when your courage kindled,
And out you stepped onto new ground,
Your eyes young again with energy and dream,
A path of plenitude opening before you.
Though your destination is not yet clear
You can trust the promise of this opening;
Unfurl yourself into the grace of beginning
That is at one with your life’s desire.
Awaken your spirit to adventure;
Hold nothing back, learn to find ease in risk;
Soon you will be home in a new rhythm,
For your soul senses the world that awaits you
Here’s a link to his book in case you want it for yourself. And you should. Oh, yes, you should!
