If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand – shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. Matthew 5:15-16 (MSG)
Meet Tate Gunning | In House Treatment
Tell us a little about your website/mission/ministry.
Our vision is to help treatment facilities operate with greater success. Through the combination of speaking engagements and consulting, we train staff on how to become more efficient, along with ways to improve how they treat their patients.
Inhouse Treatment, the website, is being developed to provide content, structure, and resources for the patients to sustain sobriety post-treatment. In other words, we provide the aftercare every addict needs once they are released from treatment.
The Inhouse Treatment philosophy is that recovery is enjoyable and can be accomplished by anyone, all it takes is commitment. Our Mission Statement: Inhouse Treatment brings uniformity and cohesion to the post-treatment recovery process.
What is the number one thing on your bucket list? Will you do it?
I’ve always been able to operate better with a goal in mind. So, I have an extensive bucket list. Here are some things in my sights: performing a TED Talk, viewing a game at Fenway Park, handling a live owl, and buying my mom a Louis Vuitton handbag.
If you could go back in time, what advice would you give to your younger self?
I would tell myself: figure out what you want to do, and do it. Because, I believe the sooner we figure out what we want, the quicker it will manifest. I would also tell myself: you can accomplish anything you set your mind to.
If you could change anything about the world we live in now, what would it be and why?
It is estimated that over twenty million American adults suffer from addiction. I wonder, how many of them actually receive the help they need? Even when they do receive attention, it’s often too expensive and lacks expertise. This is a major problem. Do we even know what we’re doing? Where’s the aftercare? If I could change one thing right now, it would start with everything centered around this topic.
If you could spend an evening with any fictional character, who would it be? What would you do?
I would spend the evening exploring the universe with Curious George and Inspector Gadget. We each have a set of weaknesses, but together we’d make an unstoppable team.
I’ve included you because I believe you are bringing much-needed light to this world. Why do you do what you do? What keeps you going every day?
For the first time in my life, I feel like I know what I came here to do. In many ways, I’ve been given another chance, and I plan to make the most of it. I remember waking up on park benches, homeless, with nothing in my pockets except a small bag of heroin; this motivates me to live each day like it’s my last.
Above all, I wake up every day seeking the love of my Heavenly Father. I’ve come to realize this life is a precious gift. He is the reason I do what I do. Without Him, I am nothing.
